Jamie MacLellan

HRM Public Art Facilitator, Halifax

Jamie MacLellan vividly recalls his first solo exhibition as an emerging artist many years ago. He has experienced the feeling that comes with success and he understands the challenges of trying to make a living as an artist. In Nova Scotia, he finds great inspiration in the abundance of talent that exists here. He also sees a big opportunity to create a more supportive environment for the arts and artists.

Jamie graduated with a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute. He is a practicing painter and works for the Halifax Regional Municipality as public art facilitator. Over the past five years he's played a key role in developing HRM's public art policy, artist-in-residence program, Open Projects public art initiatives and contemporary visual art award. Jamie has also served as a member of the board of directors at the Khyber Institute of Contemporary Art and volunteered with the Nocturne Art at Night organization.

Jamie believes one of the major strengths of the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council is the unique perspectives that come together to inform and advise government. Having worked with many artists in the region, he looks forward to representing their views and identifying ways to help the arts community excel.

It can be an incredibly daunting proposition to commit yourself to a career in the arts. Nova Scotia is rich in talent and entrepreneurial spirit. We need access to greater resources and facilities to support the development of artists.
